The Urban Centres Summary File presents summary characteristics of persons and dwellings for urban centres of 5000 or more persons enumerated at the 1981 census. The records for each urban centre include geographic area codes indicating its State/Territory, area and name.
The table information is made up of 43 tables giving data for persons, persons in the labour force, families and dwellings. Persons tables include counts for males and females by marital status, usual residence (1976, 1980 and 1981), age, birthplace by age, parents' birthplace, use of English language, birthplace by period of residence, period of residence, citizenship, race, educational institution attendance, level and field of highest qualification, age left school, total issue of females aged 15 years and over, religion by age, occupational status, income, occupational status by age. Tables for persons in the labour force provide counts for males and females by age, marital status, hours worked, industry sector, mode of travel to work, occupational status by occupation, occupation, occupation by age, birthplace by occupation, and industry. Family tables show the number of families by family type and family income. Dwelling tables include counts, by structure of dwelling, of nature of occupancy, mortgages, rents, reason unoccupied, and numbers of occupants, families, rooms, bedrooms and motor vehicles.
For some basic information about the way Census 81 was planned, designed, executed and processed, information on the person and dwelling characteristics included in statistical output and some guidance to other census products, see "Making Sense of Census 81" (C81SENSE.DOC).
The Urban Centres Summary File contains 168 logical records (one for each urban centre of 5000 or more persons). Each logical record comprises one record of geographic indicative information and 139 records containing 4550 counts or totals from 43 tables giving data for both persons and dwellings. All 23,520 physical records are padded to a fixed record length of 240 characters.
For details of the tables included in the Urban Centres Summary File, see "Full Format Summary Tables Description File (download .rtf version)".
