The Collection District Summary File presents summary characteristics of persons and dwellings for every collection district (CD) in Australia.
The records for each CD include geographic area codes which allow data to be aggregated to Statistical Division, Statistical Sub-Division, State, Census Division, Census Sub-Division, LGA Section, LGA, Commonwealth Electoral Division, State Electoral Division, Locality, Section of State, Postcode, Journey to Work Study Area and 1976 LGA, a 1976 CD field code and 1976/1981 Comparability Indicator, latitude and longitude of the centroid, and area. The table information is made up of 34 tables giving data for both persons and dwellings. Dwelling tables include counts by structure, nature of occupancy, mortgages, rents, reason unoccupied, and numbers of occupants, households, rooms, bedrooms and motor vehicles. Persons tables include counts for males and females by marital status, usual residence (1976, 1980 and 1981), age, religion, family type, educational institution attendance, birthplace, period of residence, parents' birthplace, use of English language, highest qualification, age left school, income, occupational status, hours worked, mode of travel to work, occupation and industry.
For some basic information about the way Census 81 was planned, designed, executed and processed, information on the person and dwelling characteristics included in statistical output and some guidance to other census products, see "Making Sense of Census 81". See also the Geographic Descriptor File.

All physical records are padded to a fixed record length of 240 characters.
